CAEPR Director presents at international Arctic forums on education and research
Diane Hirshberg, CAEPR Director, a lead on UAAs efforts to enhance education and research in and about the Arctic, participated in two international meetings in September: Arctic FROST and the University of the Arctic (UArctic) Congress and Rectors Forum.
Dr. Hirshberg and UAA Professor Emeritus Lee Huskey serve on the project steering committee for Arctic FROST, a National Science Foundation-funded interdisciplinary network of social scientists and educators from around the world focused on mobilizing research on sustainable Arctic development. They, along with University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Professor Davin Holen and University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) Professor Jim Powell, participated in the Annual Network Meeting and Early Scholars Workshop in Vienna, Austria, September 9-12, 2016.
Dr. Hirshberg also attended the first-ever UArctic Congress, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, September 13-16, 2016. The Congress brought together 450 participants from 200 university and research institutes from more than 20 countries. Dr. Hirshberg helped present the findings of several new reports on Arctic research publications and funding:

In addition, she moderated a research panel on lifelong learning and professional development, and with her colleagues Dale Cope (UAS) and Craig Kasemodel (University of Wisconsin Madison) presented a paper on causes, costs and potential remedies for teacher turnover in rural Alaska. She also participated, along with UAF Vice Chancellor Evon Peter in the closing plenary of the conference on a panel exploring the future of the Arctic.
Dr. Hirshberg also represented UAA Chancellor Tom Case at the UArctic Rectors' Forum, which was held during the Congress. The Rectors' Forum produced a Congress joint declaration, which can be found here: http://www.uarctic.org/about-uarctic/events/uarctic-congress-2016/declaration/
