The Center for Behavioral Health Research and Services (CBHRS) was founded in 1999 as a research workgroup in the College of Arts and Sciences. CBHRS was designated a Research Center by the UA Board of Regents in 2008, and became an affiliate of the Institute of Social and Economic Research in November (ISER) in 2015.
This mutually beneficial affiliation with ISER increases CBHRS' capacity to answer new research questions related to the economic and social implications of evidence-based interventions and augments ISER's capacity to study social and behavioral contributors to the health and well-being of Alaskans. We also retain our strong relationship with the Department of Psychology faculty and students, as well as our other cross-campus partnerships and collaborations.
CBHRS' multi-disciplinary team of scientists, research associates, and students focus on the most pressing community health problems that Alaska is facing, all of which have a relationship to human behavior. Research in evaluation and training programs that support the leading federal and state health indicators emphasized in the U.S. Healthy People 2020 and the Healthy Alaskans 2020 strategic plans including:
promoting evidence-based healthcare practice and policy; increasing access to health services and clinical preventive services; increasing access to mental health services; reducing the rates of suicide and interpersonal violence; increasing the numbers of adults and children who meet nutrition and physical activity guidelines; addressing misuse of alcohol and preventing alcohol exposed pregnancies and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs); promoting health across the lifespan.
