Provision of APA Continuing Education Credit through CBHRS

UAA Center for Behavioral Health Research & Services (CBHRS) is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.

CBHRS can work with any University of Alaska (UA) or other organization to provide APA continuing education (CE) credit at their conference, seminar, workshop, or other professional learning event. These credits are accepted by several licensing boards and for other professional purposes.

If you are considering hosting an event at which you would like to offer APA CE credit to attendees, please contact us.

Consultation and collaboration with CBHRS should ideally occur concurrently with the program planning to ensure that the event meets APA standards and guidelines. APA requires certain information to be included on all advertising information. The following statement must be included on ALL advertising materials, including any emails, websites, flyers, posters, etc.:

UAA Center for Behavioral Health Research & Services (CBHRS) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CBHRS maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

For more information on the types of materials we need to review in order to determine whether APA CE credits can be offered, please consult the Guidelines for Provision of APA CE Credit found in the CBHRS APA CE Co-sponsorship folder on UA’s Google Drive

For more information, please contact Alexandra Edwards (Continuing Education Coordinator) or Dr. Bridget Hanson (Director of Continuing Education).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many credits can be awarded for an event?

This is determined on a case-by- case basis, depending on the type of event, the presenters, the topic, and so forth. CE credit is granted on a one credit per one contact hour basis (or part thereof), and includes evaluation time. There is no partial credit. All participants must complete the entire program to earn CE credit.

How much do the credits cost?

For 2016-2017, CBHRS’s standard costs per person are as follows:

1-4 credits:          $30 (approximately a half-day program)
5-8 credits:          $60 (approximately a full-day program)
9+ credits:           $90 (anything beyond one full day)

Generally, participants pay CBHRS directly for continuing education credits. Fees above are based on this assumption. Credit card payments must be done through UA’s online credit card payment platform. A link for payment is established for each event.

UA organizations only: If you would like discuss an alternative arrangement for payment of CE fees for your event, such as a blanket payment for all CEs using the JV process, please contact us directly. Cost to internal UA organizations will vary depending on the program’s length and the likely number of attendees who would wish to receive APA CEs.

What sorts of things must be submitted for review?

We have a checklist available (see CBHRS APA CE Co-sponsorship folder on UA’s Google Drive), but generally we need the following to determine the number of credits that can be awarded:

  • Draft advertising materials (brochures, posters, emails)
  • Presenter biographies or CVs
  • Program descriptions, including:
    • Learning objectives
    • Target audiences
    • Prerequisites (if any)

My event is next week/in two weeks, etc., can I still get approval to offer APA credits?

Please contact us, we may still be able to work with you. However, APA has requirements about the information that must be available on all advertising related to an event. We will likely ask you to revise your advertising materials to include this and then redistribute them in order to meet these requirements.

Is there anything I need to submit after the event?

Yes, we have a list of materials that we need to receive to meet APA reporting requirements. You can find this list in the Document Checklist in CBHRS APA CE Co-sponsorship folder on UA’s Google Drive.
