Terra Nova Learning Systems, Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR): Consultation and Evaluation
Over the last five years, CBHRS has provided consultation and evaluation services to Terra Nova in support of their projects funded through the Small Business Innovation Research grant mechanism. Evaluation services have focused on developing and implementing small rapid-yield studies that provide immediate formative input that is used by Terra Nova to make changes and improvements in their on-line educational and training materials. Our services to Terra Nova include both qualitative and quantitative approaches to evaluation on the following projects:
Mental Health Research Partners: Helping Families Make Well-Informed Decisions (Topic 58, NIMH)
Phase II Contract: 9/21/09 - 9/20/11
An evidence-based decision aid that will provide individuals living with mental illness and their family members with a better understanding of research, help them evaluate risks and benefits, and assist them in collaboratively making well-informed decisions about research participation. Educational components for families include a DVD presentation (for small group meetings or private viewing), a print booklet, fact sheets, and other outreach materials.
Improving the Lives of Children with FASD: An e-Learning Resource for Caregivers (NIAAA)
Phase I Grant: 9/30/09 – 7/31/10
A program that addresses key issues of caregivers of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, and offers a variety of e-media tools, information, and strategies to enhance their skills in dealing with the difficulties associated with providing care to a child with FASD. Educational components include an online course for primary caregivers to increase their knowledge of the characteristics/effects of FASD and contribute to caregiver/family well-being, an informational DVD to communicate basic information on FASD to secondary caregivers (respite providers, teachers, babysitters, friends), and an online community of support involving other caretakers, advocates, and care providers.
Getting Started in Drug Abuse Research: A Multidisciplinary Introduction (NIDA)
Phase II Grant: 4/1/09 - 3/31/11
A 2-semester e-learning course with instructor-led discussion for psychiatry residents and graduate-level psychology, social work, and nursing trainees. The first semester provides information on the scientific and practical aspects of basic drug abuse research, including research design, methods, and conduct, research ethics, proposal writing, publication, and more. During the second semester, the student conducts a small-scale drug abuse research study.
Psychiatric & Psychosocial Conditions of HIV/AIDS Patients: An e-Learning Course for Rural Behavioral Health Providers (NIMH)
Phase I Grant 9/1/08-2/28/09
This course that will provide behavioral health clinicians with an improved understanding of the prevention and treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related mental disorders. During Phase I, Terra Nova will research and outline the entire Psychiatric & Psychosocial Conditions of HIV/AIDS Patients course and develop a single Prototype Module to establish proof-of-concept for the final Phase II end-product. Terra Nova will also produce a Sample Patient Brochure, one in an eventual series of informational, outreach materials for providers to disburse to patients and their family members, partners, friends, and caregivers. Both the Prototype Module and ultimate course will include rigorously researched and tested content, assessment instruments, compelling case examples, personal reflections from practitioners and HIV+ patients, and engaging multimedia components.
