Summary of ISER Responsibilities

Since 1979, Jim Kerr has helped solve economic and social research problems with computers. He does systems analysis, system administration, programming, and Web site administration, and page building for ISER’s core faculty and staff of 30 (who at any given time may have 100 projects underway), as well as more than 20 additional adjunct ISER personnel and other researchers working on ISER projects. He supervises ISER’s technical staff. and students interns hired for computer support. He also insures that computers and related equipment are set up and networked as necessary for conferences, classes, and faculty presentations, as well as for visiting faculty.  Recently he has done a lot of work insuring computer security for ISER.

Systems Analysis: Short- and long-range planning and design of computer systems for ISER.  This includes integrating hardware, networking, software, programming, and security.

Computer System Administration: Overseeing the implementation and maintenance of computer servers and systems, including purchasing and maintaining systems in an industry that is constantly changing. He works with Windows, Macintosh, Windows, Unix; Linux; Novell platforms. He is responsible for coordinating computer networking and data exchange with external organizations such as universities, government agencies, and other entities ISER does joint research with.

Programming: He has programming needed for generating surveys samples; programmed most of ISER's project management software; used statistical packages to create and analyze statistical databases; and helped create most of ISERs Web sites using Dreamweaver, ASP, HTML, and JavaScript. . In earlier years he did extensive special programming to make the 1980 and 1990 U.S. census data accessible to analysts across Alaska.. He has experience in older languages such as BASIC, FORTRAN, COBOL, C, Pascal, SPSS, and dBASE.  More recently he has worked with JavaScript, ASP; PHP/MySQL and HTML.

Webmaster: He administers the http://www.alaskool.org Web site and assists with others, including ISER’s main Web site, special project sites, and sites of organizations ISER works with. Web site administration requires continually determining ways of making the sites more useful and accessible, keeping the links consistent, installing software, and maintaining servers. He has administered Netscape on the Sun/Sparc platform; Internet Information Server on the Windows Intel/NT platform and Apache on the Linux platform.
