Early Life Lasts a Lifetime: Tuesday, January 24 talk at ISER, 12 to 1

Stephen Bezruchka of the University of Washington’s School of Public Health will talk about how early life affects our health as adults—and why changes in health policies for the youngest Americans could make us healthier as we age. Dr. Bezruchka will speak from 12 to 1 in the ISER conference room, on the fifth floor of the Diplomacy Building (4500 Diplomacy Drive). Everyone is welcome to attend this talk, co-sponsored by ISER and UAA’s Department of Health Sciences.

Assessing Ecological Risk of Proposed Mines: Can Valid Assessments be Done Pre-Design?

A new paper by Bob Loeffler, visiting professor of public policy at ISER, examines whether valid assessments of the ecological risks posed by mining projects can be done at the pre-design stage—that is, before a mining company submits a detailed mine design to government regulators. The author draws conclusions by analyzing three existing ecological risk assessments for mining projects in Alaska: post-design assessments for the Kensington and Red Dog mines and a pre-design assessment for the proposed Pebble mine.
