New Alaska Energy Statistics Report Available

A preliminary report, Alaska Energy Statistics 1960-2011, by Ginny Fay and Alejandra Villalobos Melendez of ISER and Corinna West of the Alaska Energy Authority, is now available, together with workbook tables. Final figures will be available in spring 2013.

This is the most recent annual update of energy statistics in Alaska, done for the Alaska Energy Authority. Of the 6.5 million megawatt-hours of electricity generated statewide in 2011, natural gas generated 58%, hydroelectric power 20%, diesel and other oil products 16%, coal 6%, and wind less than 1%.  That was a slight increase in shares generated by natural gas and oil products and a slight drop in the share from hydroelectric power.

Lunchtime Talk: Using E-Government in Remote Areas

Yan Cimon is an associate professor of strategy at Universite Laval, in Quebec City, and is also currently the Fulbright Visiting Chair in Innovation at the University of Washington. He has studied how Quebec could use e-government—that is, the Internet and other information technology—to help provide services to residents of remote places. With a population comparable to that of Virginia and an area three times that of France, Quebec shares many of the same challenges as Alaska in providing consistent services to all residents. Join us at ISER to learn about potential uses of e-government in remote Northern communities.

When: Monday, December 10, 12 to 1
