Diwakar Vadapalli has been an assistant professor of public policy at ISER since 2011. Before that, he was an Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) worker in rural Alaska. His research at ISER has focused on Alaska’s child-protection system. He has studied the racial disproportionality in Alaska’s foster care system, the high rates of repeat child maltreatment in Alaska, and the reasons for high turnover among frontline workers in the Office of Children’s Services, the state agency responsible for investigating reports of child abuse and neglect. For several years he chaired the Alaska Citizen Review Panel, which reviews the policies of child-protection services in Alaska and makes recommendations for change— and also takes comments from the general public on the state’s child-protection system.

He also does program evaluations and community assessments. Most recently he has led two evaluation studies and one implementation study. He teaches research methods and public policy analysis in UAA's public administration program.
