I earned my M.S. in Resource Management with emphasis in ecological economics from Simon Fraser University, Canada in 2007, and a B.A. in economics with concentration in environmental studies from University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) in 2003.
Originally from Germany, I decided to join UAA’s collegiate cross-country skiing and running teams after a career as a professional ski racer in Germany. I worked at ISER as a student and Research Associate until 2004 and was employed as an economist in a private consulting firm in Juneau and Anchorage between 2007 and 2009. I then returned to ISER and currently focus on regional economic analysis, particularly the development of input-output models. My research interests are cross-disciplinary and include the modeling of uncertainty for various aspects of economic analysis, the economic valuation of biodiversity, fisheries economics, and transportation.
Recently, I completed a benefit cost framework for valuing the benefits of an expansion project at the Port of Anchorage. As a consulting economist I worked with Alaska’s oil and gas, mining, and tourism industries to analyze their economic contributions to Alaska’s economy. For monitoring the state of the Anchorage economy, I developed a database for tracking a diverse set of economic indicators. My previous work also includes an assessment of the economic value of whale watching to local communities in Baja, Mexico.
When not at work or running in the hills behind Anchorage, one can see me bake pizza, participate in orienteering events, or ski/hike/climb/paddle in the Chugach Mountains with my girlfriend Darcy.
