Anchorage:
March 1998
The purpose of this meeting was to assess the interest among Alaska Iņupiat
organizations in an international survey of living conditions in the Arctic.
Representatives of Arctic North Slope Native Association, Maniilaq, Kawerak,
the North Slope Borough, the Northwest Arctic Borough, and NANA met with
representatives of the Institute of Social and Economic Research and Statistics
Greenland.
We agreed that a circumpolar survey of living conditions could be of great
value. Bob Harcharrek said that speaking on behalf of Ben Nageak, Mayor of the
North Slope Borough, such a survey is worth doing. Michael Pedersen of ANSC said
that the study looks worthwhile and that he would like to see a revised
description before giving a final commitment. Jack Kruse and Thomas Anderson
agreed to get out a summary of the meeting and a revised description within two
weeks.
