Employment

A principal interest is engagement in the cash economy. There are several challenges. First, many northerners take more than one job during the course of 12 months to make ends meet. This makes it difficult to estimate total time worked or total income from jobs. Second, there can be significant self-employment, or casual employment such as making crafts or child care that people may not consider in their count of time worked or estimated income. Third, many households have non-wage income, thus complicating the estimation of wage income, either individually or for the household as a whole. Finally, the questions asked are a compromise between the purposes of SLiCA and the purposes of the Canadian Aboriginal Peoples Survey.

SLiCA employment questions include information about the job worked the most hours by the respondent in the past twelve months. This was an attempt to be able to characterize the occupation and employment of a single, "most important" job. SLiCA does not include a question on total weeks worked on all jobs, or even the most important job. SLiCA does include a respondent estimate of wage income for all household members and personal income for the respondent individually. Thus neither estimate can be assumed to indicate the job income of the respondent.

Variables (many of which are discussed below) include:

RJOB: Respondent had a job in previous 21 months.

RFTEMP: Respondent had a full time job in previous 12 months.

RPTEMP: Respondent had a part time job in previous 12 months.

RESPEMP: Respondent employment summary.

C12: Hours worked per week on longest-held job.

C12r: Grouped values of C12 (under 38, 38-40, over 40).
