The goal of the London meeting was to build on national investments in questionnaire development to achieve an international set of questions to pretest.

In preparation for the workshop, we divided the questions developed by each country into separate Word documents by topic area. We hyperlinked these documents into a spreadsheet matrix  by topic area and country. To view an example of the matrix (without hyperlinks to documents), see Topic Matrix.

We developed a summary of our main focus by topic area and the questions to be included in pretesting by topic for the international core. We understood that the questions selected for pretesting greatly exceeded the number of questions feasibly asked in a personal interview. We expected the pretest results to be instrumental in narrowing the scope of questionnaire items.

Following the London meeting, Jack Kruse developed a first draft of an international pretest questionnaire that was reviewed by the international team. The questionnaire includes hyperlinks to background documents by topic area and question. See:

The Post-London version of the international questionnaire appears in three formats: Html, PDF, and Word. Use these as follows:

1. HTML: The HTML versions of the questionnaire have live, question-specific and section-specific links to HTML documents that give the relevant "lineage" and discussion. Note that the formatting is a bit screwed up, particularly using Netscape. Use these to look at question and section explanations as you review the questionnaire.

2. PDF: These PDF versions are readable and printable with Acrobat Reader, free, downloadable software that works on any computer. The cannot be readily edited however, nor do they have links to question or section explanations.  Use these to print out formatted versions of the questionnaire.

3. Word: These Word versions can be edited. Note: many computers have anti-virus plug-ins that prevent you from reading Word files from the web. Also, Netscape does not appear to support you following links within Word documents. You can, however, download these versions by clicking on the right button of your mouse. Use these to extract, save and edit portions of the questionnaire for suggested changes.
