Cultural Values of Native Foods

The Alaska Native Knowledge Network website has a section on Alaska Native Values for Athabascan, Cup'ik, Iñupiaq, Yup'ik, Tlingit, and Alutiiq people. It may help students to understand the importance of Native foods to their culture if they think about the activities that best fit their cultural values. Examples of activities involving Native foods are:

Hunting, fishing, and gathering with relatives
Giving away your first harvest
Sharing harvests with elders
Processing food and making art and handicrafts with relatives
Sharing knowledge about your environment in your Native language
