Changes in Ice Cover

Enoch Sheidt from Kotzebue noted, "We have the same problem (with ice); it's not freezing up as thick. When we go hunt seal by showmachine - used to be late October now it's getting to December."

Robert Tocktoo of Brevig Mission noted, "A lot of the elders don’t read but they know what is coming ahead. If we don’t get any ice up there wintertime until late March or something that open ice goes all the way to the open beach to Brevig. That North wind always takes that ice out and then it is open all winter. I couldn’t go nowhere last winter."
