Concern About Local Site Contaminating Fish

Jack Lorrigan of Sitka noted, "One of the biggest concerns is impacts of the pulp mill operating over 30 years in Silver Bay. It is called that because it is a wintering ground for herring. Over Sitka's history, it has been a major port - the Russians, the navy, industry. There is a history of lead based paint and I suspect it is showing up in fish."

Eli Nukapigak of Nuiqsut reported, "The biggest changes are in the Colville River. People cannot eat more than six burbot--because of the Umiat site--all the spawning fish are being contaminated by BBT and DDT. I hope they clean up that site because fish and caribou are our main diet. Contamination is now on our doorstep. All around us. Our fishing and hunting ground is being developed for oil all around us east and west. Now development of NPRA on the west side.
