Changing Numbers of Sperm Whales

Kenneth Cleveland from Quinahagak noted, "There are some dead beached whales in my home area. There are a number of whales that have been sighted on the beach, like about 8 of them. This is the first time in my life that I have noticed this. I wonder why they are beached in abundance. This is the first time this has ever happened. The whales are sperm whales. So this is the first time. Nobody came to look at the beached whales."

Alex Bird from Emmonak added, "Another thing that is unusual is the southeastern wind that brought in beached whales this past spring.

John Abraham from Toksook Bay added, "In my home area, they were seal hunting and they spotted a sperm whale. One sperm whale was being attacked by killer whales and the smaller killer whales were on the attack. They were attacking a sperm whale. So on one of our spring hunting trips we saw a sperm whale that was beached. Maybe this was one of the whales that was being attacked."
