We have constructed a prototype model integrating data on caribou population and distribution with wage employment, subsistence time and harvests, local income, and migration. The model simulates changes at the village level over a 40 year period.
We have begun a dialogue on modeling ideas with village residents and are preparing for another set of village work sessions.
In Year 3, we will work with village experts to refine the model interface, focusing in particular on how to incorporate local knowledge in the explanatory feature of the model.
In Year 4, we will work with village experts to apply the model and discuss alternative explanations for changes at the village level. These discussions will set the stage for local residents to discuss policy implications and for community experts and scientists to set research goals.
